Linux gaming industry

February 6th, 2006 · 1 Comment

The Gentoo project is a strong input for the Linux gaming industry. This technology allows an easy and comfortable support of games under the Linux operation system. The system is in the development stage for many components, though the Gentoo Company has something interesting for possible clients. This system is going to become a real cross-platform solution and it is already workable for AMD processors. The development of compatibility with Intel is still on the way.

Gentoo Linux was presented at the last Electronic Entertainment Exposition that took place in Los Angeles. The announcement about the creation of Gentoo Games and GameCD America’s Army was made there and due to its very successful presentation, different companies appeared to be interested in the GameCD by the Gentoo Games technology.

The development of Linux game servers is a main purpose of the Gentoo Games Corporation. Their activity is concentrated around the Gentoo GameCD technology that permits anyone, who has a modern computer, to only insert a disk to a CD – ROM, to switch on the computer and load it with the GameCD. The GameCD starts the game and it handles auto-detection and hardware configuration.

The Gentoo GameCD transforms any PC with NVIDIA or ATI video cards to a console like a machine; any Linux or Windows user can handle the GameCD. This feature extends the area of this technology usage, especially for the Linux game servers. The final purpose of this activity is the development of the Linux gaming technologies of a new level. As a result, users and owners of the Linux game servers would have more flexible software that gives a possibility to play games on a modern PC without any specific computer installations and settings.

Gentoo Games, Inc. is a separate company that is independent from the Gentoo Linux project. The Commercial purposes of Gentoo Games should not affect the social contract of Gentoo Linux. The profits, obtained from Gentoo Games, Inc. Activities, will be directed for the Gentoo Linux development and also for the whole development of GNU/Linux. In addition, Gentoo Games will provide more possibilities for developers, who wish to help in the development of the Linux game servers.

The Gentoo crypto team has set the purpose of developing the support for Trusted Computing Group (TCG) in Gentoo this year. TCG is an open standard for hardware specifications that defines cryptographic functions (Trusted Platform Module – TPM) that contain private keys outside of the system memory. The hardware also provides trusted loading functions (TCG Software Stack – TSS). These functions control that the private keys are unavailable for the usage if the operation system is changed to an untrusted one.

There are some TSS applications of TCG architectures that are preferable for Gentoo. They are the following:

- Trusted kernel execution;

- Trusted grub execution;

- Trusted kernel modules.

TPM allows storing cryptographic keys in hardware instead of placing them to the file system. It uses the OpenSSH, Selinux and Apache servers, OpenCA certification authorities, GnuPG and SSH keychains for these purposes.

Gentoo Games, Inc. demonstrates some real achievements before the beginning of its actual existence. They made the announcement about a full support of the 64 - bit AMD Opteron platform. Currently, Gentoo/AMD64 is searching for developers, who will help achieve the support of the x86-64 Intel processors and the line of the EM64T products. This is a giant step forward, which will affect all the UK game servers and Linux game servers all over the world. The usage of new hardware platforms is a significant progress that will give much joy and comfort to the Linux gamers all over the world.

    […] I tried Google’s BlogSearch today with keyword “Gentoo Linux” just for the heck of it. Interesting, the result coincided with an idea I had in mind before. The first post is this article from TheInternetOne and it summarizes the idea of integrating Gentoo, Linux, and some other crypto architecture to create a secure platform to develop Gentoo Gaming environment. The logistics would be making the game CD bootable via Gentoo and this can turn our PC’s into console boxes. […]
