What is the optimal number of keywords in an AdWords ad campaign? What is the maximum number of keywords you can employ in a campaign. These are oft-asked questions. The answer to these are simply, it depends. In fact, we would rather not answer these specifically because it is not in the number or amount of keywords that the success of your ads would rely on. It’s on the quality and the effectiveness of each set of keywords.
After all, this is contextual advertising. And success would depend on ad relevance, ad value, cost and competition.

However, for better organization we advise that you group your keywords according ideas, and this can be done by dividing campaigns into to different Ad Groups, each of which conveys a single idea that you want to bring forth to your intended audience.
To optimize performance, though, is a different thing altogether. Google generally advises the following figures to ensure your AdWords campaign remains responsive and robust.
- Maximum of 25 ad campaigns
- Maximum of 100 Ad Groups per campaign
- Maximum of 750 key words or phrases per Ad Group
- Maximum of 2,000 key words or phrases per campaign
- Maximum of 500,000 key words or pgrases per AdWords account
