The choice of an operation system is a very actual question for today. Microsoft provides Windows traditions that are associated with standard interface features and compatibility with any type of software. At the same time, Linux systems are not less efficient nowadays. With new technologies you can use Linux for work and entertainment in the same way you did it with the Windows system.
The choice of an operation system for game servers’ implementation should be performed at an early stage of this procedure. Nowadays, many computer clubs and gaming servers are being transferred to the Linux operation system. It makes sense from the economical point of view, since Linux is a free open source system. However, some problems may appear at this point.
The architecture “client – server” usually lies in the base of the networks. The Windows clients for the Internet access like Internet Explorer are stable and compatible and free for the Windows users. It is quite enough to install Windows 98 for using this software. A Windows computer has higher vulnerability for hackers’ attacks, though administrators can solve this problem by the re-installation of the etalon disk. Another disadvantage of this operation system is a low quality of the TCP/IP stack.
A Linux client has some advantages for the work in the Internet and these qualities could be helpful for the game server implementation as well. The Linux client has a perfect TCP/IP stack that leads to a higher performance for the user. Moreover, the Linux client software has a higher protection from Internet attacks and modern web browsers have a high level of compatibility, performance and stability. Here is something interesting for advanced users. Linux has many built-in tools and is available for the remote recovering and update. Certainly, the main advantage of this system is that it is free. The Problem of the Linux client is that it is unusual for a user, since its interface differs from Windows standards. Nevertheless, it is possible to solve this problem partially by the usage of the skins.
It would be a better solution to use the Linux server platform for the game server implementation, as Windows has bad TCP/IP and does not have advanced traffic management tools. Simultaneously, the Windows server provides difficulties for the games configuring on the web game server. This platform is not popular among the providers and has a low protection level if a real IP address is used for big time ranges.
The Linux server has good network tools and abilities for thin priorities adjustment, including a quality of service. It has powerful and free network utilities, such as proxy, mail and other servers. The Linux systems have a high level of the business data protection that is possible at a proper adjusting level.
Windows has advantages, when it is used for gaming. The most part of the game software is developed for this platform and it has a user friendly interface. Nonetheless, some games run faster under Linux (for instance, Linux 3 and other games that are based on its engine). There are many free games for Linux and it has a higher protection level, as many games are ported for Linux. You can run the Windows games under the Linux operation system with the help of emulators. These emulators are freeware; thus, there will be no problems with licensing, though the same games under these two operation systems can behave in a different way. For instance, playing Counter Strike under Linux with the emulator causes sound delays.
The Linux’s game server new platform has many advantages and is competitive with the Windows platform. The options are there. It is up to you to choose which one suits you best.
