NETGEAR announces availability of first Skype Wi-Fi phone

Netgear, a company that provides networking products throughout the world has announced the availability of Skype SPH101WiFi phone. This is the first device to enable mobile Internet telephony without the need for a PC.

This is also the first Skype-Certified device that allows users the freedom to make domestic and international calls to other Skype users without any charge. The Wi-Fi phone will be operational anywhere in the world provided there is a secure or open access to a Wi-Fi network. The device is equipped with preloaded Skype software with the screen showing the availability of contacts in a manner similar to the PC experience.

“We are pleased to announce pre-order availability of NETGEAR’s Skype Wi-Fi phone to those who have been anxiously awaiting the product launch since we unveiled a prototype at the Consumer Electronics Show,” said a statement issued by Netgear chairman and CEO Patrick Lo. “Our phone combines NETGEAR’s innovative wireless networking technology with the simplicity of the Skype experience, while freeing users from the PC. With tens of thousands of customers already registered for more information on the NETGEAR Skype Wi-Fi phone via our Web site and millions of registered Skype users.”

The phone is currently available on pre-order online and is priced at $249.99. The company has also promised 24/7 technical support. All users who place pre-orders will get 30 free SkypeOut minutes and 30 days of free Skype Voicemail as a gift for becoming one of the first few owners of the innovative package.

Saul Klein, a vice president of global marketing for Skype commented that everything was the same, but Netgear’s phone allowed users the freedom of mobility, “We are committed to working with industry leaders like NETGEAR who share our dedication to connecting the world through easy-to-use, innovative technologies,” he added.

Meanwhile Skype has also announced a collaboration with Polycom to launch “a Skype-certified, co-branded USB speakerphone.” This device is targeted at businesses.
