Online Advertising with the Stars

June 16th, 2006 · No Comments

People go into business to make money. Businesses make money if the product that you sell gets purchased. The more people buy, the more money your business makes presumably.

In order to have buyers, you need to get your product somewhere where your target market can see it. You want your product to become a hit and needed or wanted by the public. To do that, you need advertising.

Advertising is about getting the attention of your target market. The aim is to know that your product exists, for one. The other purpose is to move them to buy it.

Whether it’s on the web or in the real world, you have to get your target market to even notice your product exists. That means that you really need to know who your buyers are so that you can put your ads where they will see it and catch their interest. Sounds easy, right?

If you know your target market the job is easier. You’re next step is to find out what their interests are. This will give you an idea of who, and what, your prospective buyers are likely to look up on the net and which sites they will visit.

One statistic that most online advertisers should know is that among the most searched items on the internet are celebrities. People love to know about people and the more controversial the artist, the higher the number of searches. The queries through search engines are in excess of 40 million.

Take for example Paris Hilton. This socialite began her jump into the limelight with the release of her pornographic home video. While the hotel heiress and her lawyers insist that she had nothing to do with it becoming public fodder, it does not change the fact that it did make the rounds on the net, faster than you could say jumping jelly beans.

Paris Hilton used the notoriety to her advantage. She made the most of being in the public eye. She has been part of a reality TV show, been a guest in various TV shows and programs and had a part in a movie. She has also now written a book, recorded a music album and come out with her line of perfume.

People may like or dislike the track that Paris Hilton has taken to fame but it doesn’t change the fact that they do look up her name, especially the infamous video. There are a lot of sites, fan sites or hate sites, which talk about her and her latest activities. For those in advertising, here are perfect venues to display your products.

Think about it. Who looks up Paris Hilton? Mostly teenage boys and quite a number of men who want to watch the video. So here is the perfect place to put an online ad if your product is meant for boys.

There are also teenage girls who want to be just like the socialite. Paris Hilton has had some impact on the girls’ fashions. If your product is something like girl’s accessories, clothes or maybe even perfumes, you may want to put an online ad here.

Your product does not even necessarily have to be related to what the celebrity fan site you choose is about. For example, fan sites to pop princess, Britney Spears, do not only have online advertisements about music. There are ads about perfumes, clothes, watches, video games, video rentals, screen savers and more. There are even ads for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America.

Celebrity fan sites are among the best places to put online ads because your product gets great exposure here. Even if majority of the visitors to these sites do not actually click on your ad when they first see it you don’t need to be concerned. If they keep seeing your ad, hopefully they’ll develop familiarity with your brand. Achieving brand recall is also a great thing; and if they associate you with a celebrity because they found your ad on a celebrity fan site, all well and good. Companies pay millions for that benefit.

Remember that it is a numbers game and you really do need that exposure. The more people who see your ad, the bigger the possible number of clients you can have. Usually, only about 10 percent of all the visitors will actually click on your ad. This is why you need the traffic that celebrity fan sites get. 10 percent of 40 million is definitely nothing to sneeze at.

.Advertising on celebrity fan sites implies that your products are fashionable and fun. There is the impression that they are trendy or the latest in thing. Even though we know that the impression may be wrong, people still tend to think it since they associate your product with the celebrity they want to see. It’s rather like how some people will flock to the stores that they see their idols coming out of simply because the celebrity had been there. That is great business for the store if they all actually buy.

Online advertising is pretty much the same. Your product is on a page of their idol. If this fan site is one of the most visited about this particular celebrity, and your product matches what they (the fans) think their idol likes, watch out! Your click through numbers will definitely rise.

Still not convinced? Let’s put it another way. One of the truest sayings in business is: “Location, location, location”. Where you put your ad is important because you want people to find your business easily and quickly. You want to put your business where it will get the attention of your customers. You need to get your business where the people are in order to possibly increase your sales. If you watch Donald Trump’s The Apprentice, this lesson is emphasized every season.

Let the popularity of celebrity fan sites work for you. It is one of the prime locations on the internet. It makes absolutely perfect sense.
